Old Rasputin Imprerial Russian Stout - North Coast, Fort Bragg CA An exemplary specimen of itís genre, this beer starts big and doesnít taper off until long after it leaves your tongue. Roasted malt and coffee flavors come to the fore, with just the right amount of bittering to keep it from finishing sweet. An all around excellent stout.

Arrogant Bastard Ale - Stone, Escondido CA As the bottle will tell you in no-so-subtle terms, you probably aren't good enough to drink this beer. If you should feel adventurous, however, expect copius amounts of a secret strain of hops that lends this ale a pungent but complex and beguiling flavor that seems to take forever to resolve.

Affligem - Affligem Brouwerij, Flanders Belgium A perfect first Belgian for the uninitiated or a great way to cool off on a hot day, this beer is perhaps less sweet than one might expect from this style. Toasted malt, yeast, and a hint of cloves make up the primary flavors in this exceptionally smooth ale. As the head dissipates and the beer warms it takes on a dryer flavor, adding to itís already refreshing character.

Duvel - Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat NV, Belgium The original Belgian Strong Pale Ale, Duvel is famous the world around for its craggy, lacy, luxuriant head and perfectly balanced flavor. Light and drinkable but very complex, Duvel starts out with a solid malt backbone decorated with pear and citrus notes. Its high alcohol content is masked by the slightest sourness in the dry and somewhat bitter finish.

Delirium Tremens - Brouwerij Huyghe A house favorite, this medium-bodied, golden ale has been Ďelectedí best beer in the world more than once. Triple fermentation with re-fermentation in the bottle give this brew incredible complexity, with layers of citrus, cherry, yeast and light spice. That said, itís very drinkable for such a deep and contemplatable offering.

Chimay PremiŤre - Bieres de Chimay, Belgium The most famous trappist beer in the world, Chimay is superbly drinkable with a sweet malt complemented by flavors of fruit and spice. This brew opens up a lot as it warms, so sip it slowly. A great introduction to Belgian beers for people who normally drink ambers.
